Episode 053: Some of Us Are Too Fat To Hike

I often joke about a date I had with someone who wanted to hike Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale, AZ, and I realized I wasn't interested in pretending I could make it all the way. I poke fun at my weight because I used to be really fit in college and could hike Camelback Mountain effortlessly. I still see myself as that young kid; I've just become heavier and lazier, and I prefer to be honest with myself about not meeting certain physical challenges. I know I can lose the weight and become fit again, so I don't criticize myself too harshly. I'm just in a different phase right now.

Occasionally, hikers on Camelback Mountain mention that they wish they had brought more water or consumed less alcohol the previous night. It's important to prepare these younger adults for the reality that hiking it now may not be the same experience they had a decade ago in college.
